Ram (ラム))

Ram is a major supporting character in Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World. She is an Oni and the elder twin sister of Rem. Like her sister, Ram works as a maid in the service of Roswaal L. Mathers and is a member of the Emilia Camp. Known for her sharp wit and pride, Ram has a distinct personality that sets her apart from her younger sister.

Appearance

Ram has a distinctive appearance, characterized by her pink hair and red eyes. Like her sister Rem, Ram is an Oni, but she lost her horn during a raid on their village when she was a child. This event has greatly impacted her strength and abilities as an Oni, though she remains a formidable character. Ram usually wears the standard maid uniform as part of her duties in the Mathers household, but her commanding presence makes her stand out, especially in comparison to her more reserved sister.

Personality

Ram is highly confident, proud, and blunt, often displaying a sharp tongue and a dismissive attitude toward those she considers beneath her. Despite this, she has a deep sense of loyalty to Roswaal, whom she reveres, even going so far as to overlook some of his more questionable actions. Her complex relationship with Roswaal is central to her character arc, as her loyalty to him drives many of her decisions.

Though she appears cold and unapproachable at times, Ram cares deeply for her sister Rem, and she is capable of showing genuine affection and concern for those close to her. Her backstory reveals a past of immense talent, as she was considered a prodigy among the Oni, possessing overwhelming power compared to Rem before the loss of her horn.

Abilities & Powers

Ram is a highly skilled magic user, focusing primarily on wind magic. Despite losing her Oni horn, which originally amplified her power, she remains proficient in combat and is a dangerous opponent thanks to her strategic mind and magical prowess. Some of her notable abilities and techniques include:

[1] Wind Magic: Ram’s primary combat ability revolves around manipulating wind. She can generate powerful gusts to attack her enemies or defend herself by creating barriers of wind.
[2] Clairvoyance: Ram possesses the unique ability of "Clairvoyance," allowing her to see things from a great distance. This ability gives her an edge in battle and reconnaissance, enabling her to strategize effectively.

Weapons & Attacks

Though Ram primarily relies on her magical abilities, she is also adept at hand-to-hand combat when necessary. Her sharp instincts and agility make her a dangerous opponent even without her horn.

[1] Fura (フーラ): Fura is Ram's most used wind magic. Ram shoots wind slashes with a super high speed that can cut through wood, stone, and flesh with ease.
[2] El Fura (エル・フーラ): Ram unleashes a blade of wind, travelling at maximum velocity. It is noted that the attack can't be physically countered.
[3]Ul Fura (ウル・フーラ): Ram is capable of rewriting the world around her, transforming the air around her into blades of wind, which are sent hurling towards her enemies. The blades travel sporadically and without a set course, turning their target into minced meat.
[4]Al Fura (アル・フーラ): Ram unleashes an extremely devastating torrent of wind blades that destroy everything and everyone in its path. The unleashed wind blades are described as having the force of a gigantic dragon and the sharpness of a treasured sword. People who are hit with this spell immediately have their eardrums destroyed, their entire bodies slashed to pieces, and, at the end, not even a pool of blood is left of them.

History and character arc

Ram’s relationship with Roswaal L. Mathers plays a significant role in her character development. Her deep loyalty to Roswaal stems from her belief that he saved her after she lost her horn. Throughout the series, it becomes evident that Ram is aware of Roswaal’s manipulations and ulterior motives, yet she remains loyal, believing that she owes him her life. This loyalty is tested as the story progresses, particularly in the later arcs, where Roswaal’s true intentions are revealed.

Ram’s bond with her sister Rem is also central to her story. After Rem falls into a comatose state due to the actions of Lye Batenkaitos, Ram is one of the few characters who still retains memories of her sister. This adds an emotional weight to her actions as she strives to protect and ultimately revive her sister, while dealing with her own loyalty to Roswaal.
